Pieter Boeles worked as journalist (“ANP”, 1969-1972); editor (“Nederlands Juristenblad” en “Advocatenblad”, 1972-1982); attorney (Goudsmit & Branbergen, 1975-1978; Boekel van Empel & Drilling, 1978-1982; Everaert Advocaten immigration lawyers, 1982-2001).
From 1996 till 2009 he was professor of Immigration Law at the University of Leiden and during one year (1999) part-time professor Migration Law at the University of Amsterdam.
Until 2012 he was chairman of the editorial board of the journal “Jurisprudentie Vreemdelingenrecht” and member of the editorial board of the journal “European Journal on Migration and Law”. After reaching emeritus status, he remained active in the field. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Aliens’ Affairs (Adviescommissie Vreemdelingenzaken) and a member of the Meijers Committee (Standing committee of experts on international aliens-, refugee and criminal law).
Since 2013 he is a visiting professor in the section Migration Law of VU University. He participates in various projects, amongst others the Migration Law Clinic and the Border Deaths project. Further he is involved with documentary making as a contribution to the valorization of VU University's research.
