Michał Gondek studied law in Poland and the Netherlands. In 2002 he obtained a degree of Master of Laws, with distinction, from the University of Warsaw. In 2003 he received a degree of Master of Laws in international, European and comparative law, cum laude, from Maastricht University. From 2003 until 2008 he was a junior researcher at the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. At that university in 2009 he defended a doctoral thesis on extraterritorial application of human rights treaties, which brought him the Dutch Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award for the best PhD thesis on human rights and the Polish Manfred Lachs Prize for the best book debut in public international law.
Since 2008 he is an official of the European Commission. As a legal officer at that institution he has worked in the areas of gender equality, non-discrimination and free movement of workers.
