During a sabbatical for a year (until 30 June 2015) Hielke Hijmans works on a thesis, as associated researcher of the Free University Brussels (VUB) and the University of Amsterdam. The purpose of this thesis will be to encourage thinking on how EU law can effectively ensure privacy and data protection in an era of globalization and continuous technological developments. Independent data protection authorities will play a central role in this thesis. As from October 2004, he works at the Office of the European Data Protection Supervisor (Brussels). Until 1 July 2014 he was Head of Unit for Policy and Consultations. From November 2000 to September 2004, he worked as referendaire in the Court of Justice in Luxembourg. Until 2000, he held different posts within the Dutch administration. His specialisations are EU law and law on Internet and privacy, on which topics he published several articles.
